Jeep safari

Get off the usual Tourist Trail and have an experience beyond the ordinary! Whether you want to get behind the wheel or just sit back and enjoy the ride in an open-top jeep vehicles, and use the opportunity to explore the rocky mountains of Thassos with beautiful gorges, plateaus, beautiful waterfalls, endless olive groves, magnificent views and far out places that can only be reached by 4x4.

Learn about the history and the traditions of the Island visiting the villages, seat with locals and taste our local treats with the Thassian hospitality that characterize us.

Our day starts as we drive away from the village of Limenaria, known for its long history of mining in ocher and iron, heading towards the monastery of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, to the locals and beyond, known as Panagouda. You can see the miraculous icon of Virgin Mary and learn about the history that accompanies it and is closely connected with the construction of the Monastery at this particular location.

As we drive up, through the vast olive groves, you will have a chance to hear about growing and harvesting olives and olive oil production.

Our next stop is one of eight active marble quarries in Thassos. From here, we’ll drive the hairpin roads up Mount Ipsarion, the island’s highest peak. Soaring to 1,206 metres, this pine- covered mountain has a lookout point commanding breathtaking views over the entire island, the island of Samothraki, Kavala and sometimes the island of Limnos. At southwest you can see Mt. Athos. At the north you can spot the main land and the delta of Nestos River. When you arrive, don’t forget to write your name in the impression book and make your small mark in time. After working up an appetite we will go down to the mountain hut for a barbeque lunch.

After lunch and a rest on 940m, our next stop is, well-hidden, Maries Lake. Its blue-green waters lake is fringed by forests and a series of gushing waterfalls. Hidden in woodland, the air around these little falls is filled with the sounds of cicadas and croaking frogs. Continuing down to the village of Maries we will visit a local family which will welcome us, with the famous warm Thassian hospitality, and serve us with locally produced honey and sweets before we reach your hotels.

While experiencing all this you will also learn about the history, culture and traditions of the island from our professional and knowledgeable guide. Join us on this GREAT ADVENTURE!!
